Panda team to provide big data computing expertise for neuroscience in NSF spoke project

TDA affiliate Prof. Dhabaleswar K. (DK) Panda will serve as principal investigator of a project entitled Advanced Computational Neuroscience Network (ACNN) thanks to a new grant from the National Science Foundation. Ohio State Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) research scientists

Xiaoyi Lu and Hari Subramoni will serve as co-principal investigators for the project. CSE research scientist Khaled Hamidouche will also be a part of this team as a senior personnel.

The project is a “spoke” of the NSF’s Midwest Big Data Hub, which encourages the use of big data approaches to solving regional challenges. ACNN facilitates the application of data science methods to neuroscience and the development a new generation of sustainable, interdisciplinary big data research to better understand the structure, physiology, and function of the human brain. Industry, government, and academic researchers across computing, biological, mathematical, and behavioral science disciplines contribute to the design, pilot, and support of powerful, neuroscientific computational resources for high-throughput, collaborative, and service-oriented data aggregation, processing, and open-reproducible science. This is a collaborative project with several other Midwest institutions including University of Michigan, Case Western and Indiana University.

“Advancing neuroscience connects foundational computer science with medical and social science end-users and represents the translational process in action,” says Panda. “There is a critical need to process the massive neuroscience data using novel high performance and big data computing tools. The OSU team will be providing such expertise to the neuroscience researchers, practitioners, and end users to advance the field.”
