Social and Behavioral Determinants of Infectious Disease

The College of Nursing at The Ohio State University in partnership with College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Sociology invite applications for a tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to study the social determinants of health with an emphasis on infectious disease and antibiotic resistance. This position will contribute to a substantial university Discovery Themes investment to enhance cutting-edge research on infectious disease detection, treatment and prevention. This investment builds upon existing strengths and a culture of academic collaboration to foster cross-disciplinary research with sustained global impact.
We seek candidates who are well-grounded in nursing science from a social science perspective to join a cross-campus effort to address infectious disease broadly and antibiotic resistance in particular.
It is now recognized that understanding the etiology, treatment, and prevention of disease requires integrating proximate biomedical processes as well as the underlying social determinants and bio-psycho-social factors associated with emerging infectious diseases. Although chronic disease has received more attention in social research to date, social factors may be equally if not more decisive in the emergence and re-emergence of infectious disease.
Nursing and social science research can contribute to an understanding of infectious disease transmission and prevention and advance scientific understanding of the emergence and prevention of antibiotic resistance. These approaches can also guide the development of evidence-based interventions to prevent and treat emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, including antibiotic resistant infections. As an example, antibiotic stewardship programs are an important component of holistic strategies to prevent the emergence of antibiotic resistance, but relatively little attention has been paid to the contributions of social science disciplines to these programs. Social and behavioral approaches can explore how culture, religion and politics condition the diffusion of new treatments, the implementation of antibiotic stewardship and other prevention efforts and factors associated with adherence to existing treatments.
It is expected that this position will contribute to building links to interdisciplinary research centers and programs at the university and the Discovery Themes Initiative. We seek candidates who will maintain vigorous research programs, actively seek external funding, contribute to both graduate and undergraduate teaching, and provide service to the university and the profession.
Applicants are expected to have a PhD in Nursing or relevant social science discipline by the start of employment, and to present evidence of excellence in teaching and research.
