InFACT Hosts A.G. Kawamura: Envisioning an Agricultural Renaissance

On Jan 18, A.G. Kawamura, former Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, addressed a group of Ohio State faculty, staff, students and external partners at an event on main campus organized by InFACT. His remarks focused on how global food systems are changing in dynamic and remarkable ways. According to the third-generation fruit and vegetable grower and shipper from Orange County, California, the challenges and opportunities that are emerging with the advent of expanded knowledge, technology and information systems are forcing us to re-think all aspects of agriculture.

Jan 31 Food Systems Seminars with Kate Clancy

Join Kate Clancy, a national expert on sustainable agriculture and food systems, for two seminars on Wednesday, Jan 31 in 3150 Smith Lab that will be sponsored by InFACT. The first is an interactive lecture from 11am-12:30pm with information on building successful interdisciplinary systems projects. The second, to be held from 2-3:30pm, will focus on building a career in food systems research and practice. The conversation will explore paths forward, including social and cultural, as well as resource barriers and how to maneuver through and around them. RSVPs are not required. Open to faculty, staff, students and external partners. RSVPs are not required.

Register Today for Feb 8 TDAI and InFACT Network Gathering

How can big data tackle food security challenges? Join Ohio State's Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI) and InFACT at an informal gathering of our networks to explore how we can tackle these challenges together. Get to know your colleagues, hear about innovative work happening at the intersection of the two Discovery Theme programs, and learn about collaboration opportunities. To be held Thursday, Feb 8 from 5-7pm at Watershed Distillery (1145 Chesapeake Ave, Suite D, Columbus) faculty, staff and current or potential community partners are encouraged to attend. Appetizers and beverages will be provided. Casual dress.

April Conference to Promote Efforts to Bring Healthy Local Food to More Cafeterias

Ohio State University Extension will serve as the local host for the National Farm to Cafeteria conference in Cincinnati April 25-27. The conference is designed for school districts looking to start or expand a Farm to School program, consumers who want to learn more about local food opportunities, as well as farmers and producers looking for ways to sell fresh, local foods to schools and other institutional cafeterias. The event will include a pre-conference forum on April 25 that will highlight Ohio’s Farm to School program. InFACT is a sponsor of the preconference event.

Meet Wuyang Hu, InFACT Faculty Hire in Agriculture and Food System Economics

Wuyang Hu recently joined The Ohio State University’s Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics (AEDE) in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences as an InFACT faculty hire. He is an applied economist with a focus on the intersection of the environment, economics and society.  Hu comes to Ohio State from the University of Kentucky’s Department of Agricultural Economics where he served as the H. B. Price Endowed Professor and Principal Investigator of the University’s Food Systems Innovation Center.
