Nutritional Metabolomics for Health

Position

Assistant or Associate Professor

Department

College of Education and Human Ecology, Department of Human Sciences

Focus Area

Foods for Health

Description

The Human Nutrition Program in the Department of Human Sciences seeks applications to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This position is part of the Ohio State University Discovery Themes Initiative “Foods for Health” with an effort distribution focusing on research (60% research, 20% teaching, and 20% service).

This exciting university initiative, which has been underway for several years, aims to assemble a critical mass of transdisciplinary scholars across multiple departments and colleges who are focused on Food and Nutritional Metabolomics for Health. Ohio State University is one of the few public universities in the U.S. with seven health science colleges co-located with an agricultural college and a top-ranked academic medical center on one campus. We are thus poised to address the complexities of metabolomics-based food and nutritional problems in ways that enable personalized prevention and medical care, dietary recommendations, and food-based interventions to improve health and prevent disease.

The successful applicant is expected to develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program focusing on nutritional metabolomics and especially emphasizing collaborative scholarship with OSU colleagues engaged in multidisciplinary projects. S/he will also be expected to contribute to the teaching (graduate and undergraduate) and service missions of the Department of Human Sciences and the University. Applicants must demonstrate expertise in metabolomics approaches in their scholarly program. Research topics of interest include (1) using chemometrics and other computational tools to mine as well as integrate data from multi-omic analyses (e.g. metabolomics, genomics, proteomics) to address nutrition-related problems, (2) characterizing metabolic signatures predictive of disease risk and successful interventions focusing on diet and nutrition, (3) understanding metabolic mechanisms mediating health impacts of diet on the host microbiome, and (4) the application of metabolomics to define optimal nutrient requirements or dietary patterns during specific phases of the lifecycle. Other related expertise in metabolomics (e.g. using small and/or large animal models to study human nutrition and disease) will be considered. Laboratory space is available and a competitive start-up package will be developed with the successful candidate, commensurate with experience and research agenda.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., R.D./Ph.D. or other relevant degrees with experience in Nutritional Sciences, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or a related field. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level are expected to have demonstrated research productivity and evidence of, or potential for, an independently funded research program. Applicants for the Associate Professor level must have a demonstrated track record of effective teaching and mentoring, and evidence of a highly visible research program based on quality publications and the ability to secure competitive extramural funding from public or private sources.

Application Instructions

Applicants must submit an online application containing: (1) curriculum vitae, (2) a summary of past research accomplishments highlighting their relevance to nutritional metabolomics, (3) a statement of future research plans, (4) a statement of teaching philosophy and potential teaching roles, and (5) names and contact information for 3-5 professional references. Please address applications to Dr. Amanda Bird, Search Committee Chair, 347C Campbell Hall, 1787 Neil Avenue, Columbus, OH, 43210.

Review of applications will begin on March 1, 2018, and will continue until the position is filled.

Department of Human Sciences

The Department of Human Sciences is home to four core academic areas, offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees: Consumer Sciences, Human Development and Family Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Kinesiology. In addition, the department plays a leadership role in Ohio State's Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Nutrition (OSUN), and houses the Sport, Fitness and Health Program, an activity-based academic program providing classes to more than 8,000 Ohio State students each year. A strong partnership with the OSU extension office enhances opportunities for outreach and engagement in the state of Ohio. Another important university partnership exists with Ohio State's Discovery Themes, with an emphasis in our department on metabolomics.

The department has a faculty of 54 productive members, with grants from local, state, and federal organizations such as NSF, NIH, USDA, and the U.S. Department of Defense. Faculty also have industry-based funding from organizations such as Neptune Technologies and Bio-resources and the Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In FY 2016, Human Sciences had the most funded research activity in the college, with $5.6M expenditures from current awards and 18 new awards totaling $7.8M. Ten graduate majors and nine undergraduate majors are housed within the department; students may choose from 36 curricular options. In autumn 2016, 11,841 undergraduate and 614 graduate students were enrolled in departmental course work. In addition to our highly qualified faculty, we have full-time staff members, lecturers and graduate assistants to support the department's academic mission. These talented individuals provide instructional and academic assistance that is crucial to the successful operation of such a large unit.
