Preserving Diversity in the Food System Brian Snyder, Executive Director of InFACT, has been involved in responding to new regulations promulgated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) that promise to bring government regulators onto fruit and vegetable farms for the first time. With partners who are part of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC), Snyder is helping to craft appropriate exemptions, particularly for farmers who are direct marketing, defining what a “farm” is, and in general making sure the new rules are appropriate relative to the size of operations being regulated.

Are critical thinking strategies a missing piece of the puzzle in working with low-income populations? Ingrid Adams, who recently joined Ohio State as a new faculty hire through InFACT and serves as an associate professor in the College of Medicine and State Extension Specialist in Food, Health and Human Behavior in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, writes about her research on developing critical thinking skills in low-income families who experience considerable health disparities and who are at increased risk for food insecurity, chronic diseases, morbidity, inadequate quality of care, and mortality.

From the Amazon to Ohio

In a Q&A in the Summer 2017 edition of the magazine edible Columbus, Nick Kawa, a new faculty hire through InFACT and assistant professor in OSU's Department of Anthropology, talks about his recent research on biosolids in agriculture. Kawa's research interests center on human-environmental interaction, with specific focus on human relationships to plants and soils.

In-FACT of the Month

Erin Lin (sixth from left in photo), who recently joined Ohio State as a new faculty hire through InFACT and is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Global Food Politics in the Department of Political Science, successfully defended her dissertation in May 2017 and earned her PhD in Politics from Princeton University. Congrats, Erin!
