Spees Receives Grant to Address Childhood Obesity in Low-Resource Communities

Dr. Colleen Spees, an InFACT faculty affiliate, has received a $978,383 grant from the US Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to develop an efficacious behavioral, social and environmental intervention to address the complex problem of childhood obesity. Dr. Spees will serve as the PI for the project, titled “Summer Harvest Adventure.” Dr. Ingrid Adams, who recently joined Ohio State as a new faculty hire through the InFACT program, will serve as Co-PI for the project.

Casey Hoy Represents InFACT at Farm Policy Events in Washington D.C.

Casey Hoy, InFACT Faculty Director and the Kellogg Endowed Chair in Agricultural Ecosystems Management, traveled to Washington D.C. in March 2017 to participate in several high-level events related to agricultural policy. He was a featured presenter at a symposium titled “Farm Bill 2018: Policy, Politics & Potential” hosted by American University’s School of International Service and the UC Berkeley Food Institute and he briefed legislative staffers on the importance of agricultural research in the next farm bill.

The Other Side of Our Food System: Rethinking Human Waste as a Resource

How are human bodily wastes transformed into resources? And how do cultural taboos, sanitation infrastructure, and legal regulation shape and contour the possibilities of that transformation? These are questions that InFACT faculty affiliate Nicholas C. Kawa is investigating in a project that examines the use of biosolids (i.e. treated sanitation sludge) in agricultural landscapes of the American Midwest.

In-FACT of the Month

In a Q&A in edible Columbus, Brian Snyder, Executive Director of InFACT, said InFACT’s ongoing strategic planning is defining a driving goal: to improve food security so Ohio is no longer below the national and regional averages in that category. Snyder, who jointly leads InFACT with Casey Hoy, is scheduled to contribute to the quarterly magazine through 2017.
