The College of Veterinary Medicine in partnership with the Public Health Preparedness for Infectious Diseases program at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to investigate ecosystem health and the role of the environment in the emergence and dissemination of infectious pathogens affecting both animals and humans.
This position will become a member of the core Ecosystem Health faculty based in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and is one of three in a cluster of hires addressing the ecology of pathogen emergence. This new research-intensive position is part of a substantial university Discovery Themes investment to significantly enhance cutting-edge research on infectious disease detection, treatment and prevention (discovery.osu.edu/focus-areas/infectious-diseases). This investment builds upon existing strengths and a culture of academic collaboration to foster cross-disciplinary research with sustained global impact. The successful candidate will develop an extramurally-funded, nationally-recognized research program, and will also contribute to professional and graduate teaching within the College of Veterinary Medicine.
The Ohio State University provides access to state-of-the-art core facilities and instrumentation, a collaborative and collegial environment, multiple centers and programs in infectious disease research (microbiology.osu.edu, medicine.osu.edu/mii, cmib.osu.edu, phpid.osu.edu), and interdisciplinary graduate and professional education programs. If desired, the successful candidate will also be able to utilize established partnerships with the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, and the Wilds.
The successful candidate is anticipated to work with interdisciplinary research teams and find synergy with established infectious disease researchers at Ohio State. Collaboration is envisioned with the cadre of outstanding Ohio State investigators specializing in the study of environmental microbiology, zoonotic diseases, and the ecology of infectious diseases. With strategic investments through this ecology of pathogen emergence cluster, Ohio State will be uniquely positioned to respond to the need for rapid scientific response to newly emerging zoonotic pathogens, and a comprehensive understanding of the role of the environment in the occurrence of infectious diseases.
Applicants must have the minimum of a Ph.D. and experience working with environmental microbiology and ecosystem health (computational, experimental, and/or applied), demonstrated research productivity, and strong potential to create an independently-funded research program. Those that also have a DVM or equivalent degree in addition to a PhD are encouraged to apply. Applicants should also have a strong commitment to graduate and professional education and mentoring of members of underrepresented groups.
