The Department of Entomology in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences of The Ohio State University (OSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Medical and Veterinary Entomology (50% research; 30% teaching; 20% outreach) to study the biology, ecology, and management of arthropods that vector viruses and other pathogens that cause diseases of humans and/or animals. The position can be located at either the Columbus or Wooster campus, which each provide state-of-theart facilities for conducting infectious disease research and excellent opportunities for collaboration with food, veterinary, medical, public health, and animal and plant scientists. 

This position is partially funded by Ohio State’s Discovery Themes, a significant faculty hiring investment in key thematic areas in which the university can build on its culture of academic collaboration to make a global impact. In particular, the Infectious Diseases Discovery Theme aims to significantly enhance OSU’s cutting-edge research on infectious disease detection, treatment and prevention, building upon existing strengths and a culture of academic collaboration to foster cross-disciplinary research with sustained global impact. 

Candidates with one or more of the following specific research foci are especially encouraged to apply: (1) emergence, surveillance, and predictive modeling of arboviruses and zoonotic diseases, (2) ecological interactions between arthropod vectors and pathogens, (3) changes in distributions and population dynamics of arthropod vectors in response to climate change and globalization, (4) genetics of host-pathogen-vector interactions, (5) development of tactics and strategies for managing vector populations, including the evolution of resistance by vectors to management tactics. The successful candidate will also be expected to (1) teach an advanced undergraduate/graduate level course in human health entomology, (2) contribute to the teaching of existing and/or develop new graduate level courses, (3) mentor/advise undergraduate and graduate students, and (4) develop outreach programs that address the needs of internal and external stakeholders.


Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Entomology or a related field; doctoral and/or post-doctoral experience working with arthropod vectors of medical and/or veterinary significance; demonstrated research productivity; evidence of ability to
establish an externally-funded research program; evidence of effective oral communication skills; evidence of teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications: evidence of strong quantitative skills; demonstrated ability to integrate population/ecosystem and molecular/genetic level studies in a systems approach to the study of disease emergence and prevention; experience
working with interdisciplinary research teams; experience mentoring members of underrepresented groups including firstgeneration university students; experience developing/delivering outreach programs; evidence of excellence in teaching.
