Description

The Department of Design and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) seek an Assistant Professor (tenure-eligible) or Associate Professor (tenured) of Design with expertise in Information Design and Data Visualization. Candidates should be accomplished information designers with expertise in the visual translation of data-driven content and the ability to use current and emerging computational media and methods to discover, explore, analyze, and communicate complex ideas, concepts, and narratives.

This tenure-track position in the Discovery Theme of data analytics is a joint hire collaboratively situated in the Department of Design and ACCAD. ACCAD is a world-class research center that serves as a hub for a community of creative researchers exploring the potential of technology and arts based practices to inform visualization research in a wide range of disciplines. The Department of Design offers three professional undergraduate degrees in Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Visual Communication Design and an MFA in Design. These degree programs are highly-ranked by U.S. News & World Report and Design Intelligence.

The successful applicant will teach students at ACCAD and the Department of Design and will advise graduate students in the Department of Design’s M.F.A. program. The applicant will contribute to multidisciplinary research at ACCAD and should excel at participating as a member of collaborative cross-disciplinary teams. This position is partially funded by Ohio State’s Discovery Themes, a significant faculty hiring investment in key thematic areas in which the university can build on its culture of academic collaboration to make a global impact. The position offers opportunities for interdisciplinary work with other departments and this faculty member will also contribute to the development of new learning opportunities with special consideration of the visualization needs of students who are majors in Data Analytics.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an M.F.A. or equivalent terminal degree in visual, graphic, or information design, or information technology, or animation, interaction design, digital arts, or closely related fields by the start of employment. A Ph.D. degree in one of these areas is preferred. Applicants must have the ability to work on an interdisciplinary team of developers, data scientists, designers, and subject-matter experts. Familiarity with visual analysis software and high-fidelity visualization prototyping tools is necessary. A strong record of creative research and practice in the field of information design and visualization is required. Teaching experience at the university level and/or professional practice in data visualization is desired. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.
