Discovery Themes Focus Areas
The Department of Biomedical Engineering, founded in 2006 following a 35-year history as a research Center, has 28 departmental faculty members, over 60 affiliated graduate faculty from five Colleges, and a tradition of excellence in research and undergraduate and graduate education. Our undergraduate program is accredited by ABET.
Our strategic plan for growth is focused on health-related themes that leverage collaborative ties with colleagues in the Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Arts and Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Sciences, Dentistry, and Optometry -- all on the same campus. The combined technical, core, and clinical research facilities of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, the NSF-supported Mathematical Biosciences Institute, the NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Ohio Supercomputer Center and an NIH-sponsored Center for Clinical and Translational Science provide unique and comprehensive resources for biomedical engineering research and education at Ohio State.
Our engineering domain expertise spans Bioimaging, Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Biotransport, Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Engineering and Biomedical Micro/Nano Technology. We use our engineering expertise in these domains to address human health-related problems in cancer, cardiovascularand pulmonary medicine, regenerativemedicine, neurosciences, visualsciences, and musculoskeletaldisorders. In addition, we also look to build expertise in solutions for the global emergence and reemergence of infectiousdiseases, a position that is partially funded by Ohio State’s Discovery Theme Initiative, a significant faculty hiring investment in key thematic areas in which the university can build on its culture of academic collaboration to make a global impact.

For this search we specifically seek applications from exceptional candidates who:
- complement and expand our existing bioengineering expertise with demonstrated research interests in cardiac arrhythmia and/or heart failure. (Position 1)
- complement and expand our existing bioengineering expertise in any of the health-related areas listed above, including but not limited to infectious diseases. (Position 2)
In addition to a strong record of research potential and accomplishment, high-impact publications, and extramural peer- reviewed funding, applicants will be expected to demonstrate interest and accomplishment in teaching and have an earned doctoral degree and experience with medical science applications. Preferred qualifications include experience developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams, and experience mentoring members of underrepresented groups. We plan to invite selected applicants for interviews as early as December 2016; however, the search will continue until the position is filled. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications.
